We are part of Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES Division 5 Department 26), and work closely with Cherry Grove EMS to provide fire & rescue services, and transport during medical emergencies or for the mobility-impaired.
Please read a welcome letter from our President, David Gersten, and come visit us! We are located at 181 Bayview Walk, next to the Cherry Grove Community House.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long has the department been around?
We recently celebrated 75 years in Cherry Grove! How many volunteer members are there?
We are proud to have more than 50 active members in the department.Do you provide year-round services?
Yes! While most of our members are present during the summer season, there are CGFD members on the island most of the 365 days of the year.Do you have fire trucks?
Yes! Apart from our #1 pumper and #7 4x4 vehicle pictured above, we have another pumper truck at our Duryea shed, as well as several other vehicles for people transport or beach firefighting. Our vehicles are quite unique and require a lot of tender love and care to keep them running in top-notch shape. What are those little sheds I see on every walk that say “Fire Department Use Only”?
Those are our all-important hose sheds! Because our fire trucks are quite small and cannot fit a lot of hose in them, we have a unique system of keeping hoses stored in our hose sheds. If there’s a fire, firefighters can use hoses from the nearest hose sheds to quickly put water on the fire, as well as fire extinguishers and other tools we keep there. How do I become a volunteer firefighter?
Thank you for your interest! Becoming a volunteer firefighter is a great way to learn new skills, connect with people, and give back to our community. To learn more about what it takes to join, please email our Chief.
