Grill Safety
Grilling is one of the most common and fun ways of preparing food in our community. But before you fire up the grill, brush up on some safety tips to keep your cookout fun and flame-free:
Location, location, location: Place your grill on a level, stable surface away from your home, siding, decks, fences, or anything flammable. Keep it clear of overhanging trees and shrubs.
Cleanliness is key: Regularly remove grease buildup from the grill and grease trays to prevent flare-ups and fires. Clean after each use!
Inspect before you ignite: Check your grill for any gas leaks, loose connections, or damaged parts before firing it up.
Never leave it unattended: Always supervise your grill while it's in use. Don't walk away to play games or socialize for extended periods.
Have a fire extinguisher or sand handy: Keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of sand close by in case of flare-ups or emergencies. Know how to use it properly.
Storage Matters: Always store your gas tank upright in a cool, well-ventilated area outdoors, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Never store a spare tank inside your home, garage, or shed.
In case of fire, don’t wait! Call 911
Water Safety
As a beach community, water safety is an important part of the work that CGFD and other departments do.
Rescue Throw Bags are available at each beach walk for public use during an emergency. If you see someone who is caught on a rip current or otherwise can’t get out, you can use these rescue bags to help them get out. In that situation, you or someone else should always immediately call 911. Sailors Heaven lifeguards can respond and perform a water rescue. To see how to use a rescue throw bag, take a look at this video made by Cherry Grove residents Michael Fischer and Gary Sacks.
Shark Warning Flags will be up on each beach walk if there is an active, recent shark sighting or activity. This is a joint effort between the Cherry Grove Community Association (CGCAI), the National Parks Services (NPS) / Fire Island National Seashore (FINS), and the Cherry Grove Fire Department. When the flags are up, swimming will be at your own risk.
